Edmundston Paper Box Company

This is just one of a number of old plastic pails I keep in the shop for various uses.  I just happened to notice the printing on the bottom:

It struck me as incongruous that a plastic pail should be made by a paper box company.  Evidently, they saw the future was not in paper boxes and acted accordingly.

Edmundston, New Brunswick has a large pulp mill, which is paired with the Twin Rivers mill across the St. John River in Madawaska, Maine.  It would be natural for a paper box company to set up business in the area.  I can't find much about the company itself, other than it was bought in 1987 by IPL Incorporated of Quebec, a large plastics manufacturer.  According to the IPL website, in the 1960's and 70's the company produced the first plastic beverage crates, which attracted the attention of the big soft drink manufacturers.  (Remember the old wooden soda pop crates?) They also marketed the first monoblock chair in Canada, and designed and produced the first skidoo plastic covering for the Outboard Marine Company of Peterborough, Ontario, leading to contracts with both Bombardier and Motoski.

Exit paper boxes.  Enter plastic skidoo bodies.  The Edmundston factory is still going strong.
