Scaglietti Corvette

This car could have been the AC Cobra. The image comes from a  full page back cover Rex Motorcars ad in the February 1991 issue of Thoroughbred & Classic Cars magazine...

As the story goes, Gary Laughlin, Jim Hall and Carrol Shelby were pondering the unavailability and expense of a replacement Ferrari crankshaft- $1300 in 1959- and decided they could do a sports car better. By hook or by crook, three Corvette chassis were purchased off the Chevrolet production line and sent off to the Scaglietti Body company in Italy. This company was making Ferraris at the time. A body was penned and the three cars completed in the next year and a half. In the meantime Chevrolet had found out and changed their policies to make absolutely certain that could not happen again- so that was the end of that venture. Apparently Shelby never collected his car, claiming he had no money.
The car is quite attractive, described as having the most gorgeous back end ever, but I see a nicely shaped but somewhat dated design.
More story here.

Big money...
