Federal Products Corporation dial indicator

Federal Products was founded in 1918 in Providence, Rhode Island.  The company manufactures dimensional measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers and other hand tools, dial and digital indicators and gages. In 1969, the company was purchased by Esterline Technologies.  Thirty years later, Carl Mahr Holding GmbH of Goettingen, Germany merged with Federal Products to form Mahr Federal, positioning the new company as one of the world's largest manufacturer of metrology instruments.  (It turns out that there are a lot of companies that used to, or continue to, make dial indicators.  See Dial Indicators--Brand Name Comparison.)

The following was written by Leonard Tingley, Federal Products Corp., Providence RI, grandfather of Woodward Johnson, Founder of Woodland Energy®.

Ode to Precision
Oh, an Indicator is a vindicator
Of truth and common knowledge.
For it teaches more, and faster too,
Than an Engineering College.
How long is this? How short is that?
To what degree is this piece flat?
How thick is the paper in the pile?
Look for your answer on the dial.
For we've put jewels within the case,
And stamped our name across the face,
So you'll remember through the years,
That Federal always hobs their gears.
Our top and bottom place construction
Always has defied destruction,
And we speak of low friction,
As the utmost in perfection.
For, an Indicator is a vindicator
Of truth and common knowledge.
For it teaches more, and faster too,
Than an Engineering College.
