Mr. G are you sure those are not Mr. Goldbergs patent pending Triple Reverse Rocket Engines/Crash Warning Horns? I believe they were activated by a proximity switch if a car crash was imminent which instantaneously reversed the motorcycle and let out ear stinging blast to warn all spectators to take cover. The leather blanket over the passengers legs protected them from severe blast damage. Apparently setting fire to the wicker seat was a problem.

The Triple Reverse Rocket engine braking system wasn't introduced till late 1906, This earlier concept was the Enviro-drive system where the horns (actually funnels) inhaled the scent of the woodlands and wildflowers, converting it to a marginally effective and rather inefficient forward motion. The idea had be abandoned when it was found that following a rich-running or oil-burning car causing inhaliation of the exhaust could result in an uncontrolled energy boost.

If I am correct, I believe the overwhelming 'scent' as you call it in those days would have been horsesh*t, and that's what I am calling here, horsesh*t.:)

Oh, ye of little faith…don’t make me look up the patents…
