Vanished tool makers Union Tool Company, Orange, Massachusetts

Above, the only two tools in my possession that were made by this company:  a hermaphrodite caliper and a centre punch.

The Union Tool Company was founded in 1908, and specialized in machinist's tools.  It was bought by Millers Falls in 1957, under whose management its products were badged as Union, Millers Falls or Sears.  The company was wrapped up in 1975 and the factory sold to private investors who formed a new company, Sojo.  It apparently lasted for another decade.  For more on the company's history, visit Old Tool Heaven.

I have what I. Believe to be a Jaques Micrometer, 1” which was patented by Fernando Oscar Jaques. Another acceptable spelling is Jacques, which I learn in my research. I also have a 2” Jaques Micrometer manufactured by Central Tool, Cranston RI which appears to have been contracted in some sort to produce the micrometer possibly having purchased the rights from Union Tool. The curious thing about the micrometer is it has no markings and I would expect it would have a patent number, the name Jaques, Union Tool or Central Tool and this leads me to believe it to be an original prototype. It also has a pearl handle. It’s clearly a Jaques Micrometer due to its intricate workings where internal dials rotate within the barrel showing increments every 5/1000 inch. It works perfectly and I did use it for a time in 1965 while employed as a screw machine operator in Ashton, RI. I found it to be accurate.
