One of my vices is vises, 58-7843-6

Nothing very special about these, I was poking around antique markets and found these at different locations many miles apart. No other identification than that number, but who would cast in a stock number instead of a name? The name Canadian Tire came to mind, but their vise stock numbers start with 57 - .  I expect these are made in China, but can't confirm.

Um... You know the CanTire stock codes for vices? Words fail me.

Fortunately.

I can absolutely guarantee you that this vice was originally sold by Canadian Tire. How do I know this? I bought one identical to the blue one in your photographs about 35 or 40 years ago from Canadian Tire in Ottawa. It has been my main vise since then and I have been very happy with it. Unfortunately the casting of the swivel base broke a couple of years ago so I started looking around for a replacement. It is disappointing to see how vices for sale today that claim to have better specification than my old vice are actually much smaller and lighter duty than my old vice. You are correct... The "retrograde" progress in bench vices has gone on for far too long! When the vice broke I checked the SKU number on the Canadian Tire web site and for 58-7843-6 it did come up with a 4" bench vice, but one much lighter duty than the one I had. Just for fun I checked the SKU number today (14 December 2025) on the CTC web site and it is still a good part number, but it is attached to a tire inflator.
