Henri Giffard's steam powered balloon made its first flight on September 24 1852, making a 27 km flight from Paris to Trappes, Due to a strong wind, he was unable to make the return flight but did make various turns and circles, proving it could be controlled. The funnel points downwards, away from the hydrogen-filled balloon.
