Invented by Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, whose brother, Hudson Maxim, invented smokeless powder. His son, Hiram Percy Maxim, invented the gun silencer and designed one of the first automobiles. He also wrote a 1936 autobiography, A Genius in the Family (Harper & Row).
