From a time when you could find a reliable supplier of diffusers, snoots, niggers, etc.  Nice trademark too!

In the 1920's, Peter Mole was instrumental in convincing movie studios to switch from carbon arc lights to incandescent ones.  The fact that this newer kind of lighting was silent was a boon as the era of silent movies came to an end.
