The accordion and The Yankee Clipper

The Universal Standard Encyclopedia.  New York:  Standard Reference
Works Publishing Co. Inc., 1956.  An Abridgement of the
New Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia.
In the 1940's, Betty Sharp, pictured above, was a torch singer and a "pretty accordian (sic) player" (as opposed to the ugly kind) who reportedly dated Joe DiMaggio a few times.  However, in 1946 when the Yankees and the Red Sox were competing for him, she said she and Joe were engaged, prompting a small media firestorm.  Joltin' Joe denied it, and Betty later denied it, but it didn't hurt her career any.  At the very least, she got her picture in the Funk & Wagnalls!
