Short Stirling Prototype

The prototype Short Stirling (L7600, above) had its maiden flight in May of 1939 and was written off upon landing when a binding brake caused the unusually long undercarriage to collapse. The mechanism was extensively redesigned in the second prototype. This was more successful and more than 2300 units were eventually built. The aircraft saw service throughout the entire war as a bomber and a glider tug..
