The locomotive pictured is the S1, built in 1939 as a new super steam locomotive for high speed passenger service. The striking art deco styling was by Raymond Loewy. Unfortunately the locomotive was too long to negotiate curves on the main lines and it served mostly as a poster child for the P.R.R.s modern image. The last run was in 1945 and the machine was scrapped in 1949.

The only steam locomotive to have a 6-4-4-6 wheel arrangement - I wonder why PR didn't articulate the frame so that it could go around all curves?
