France's first tank

Ian Hogg.  Tanks and Armored Vehicles.  Franklin Watts, 1984.
Although designed in 1916, the St. Chamond, France's first tank, didn't go into combat until May 1917, only to discover that its long overhanging nose became stuck in rough ground.

In the Second World War, the same problem was encountered, only this time with General de Gaulle.
